conservation research position

Victoria and Albert Museum, London, UK

Research Fellow/ Assistant
£17,626 to £19,681 pa

A postdoctoral fellow or postgraduate with equivalent professional
experience is required for a one year AHRB funded project, commencing in
September, 2002.

In an innovative collaborative venture, the Victoria and Albert Museum,
London, and the Textile Conservation Centre, Winchester, are seeking to
develop sustainable solutions to the care and conservation of modern
textiles as they enter our cultural heritage. Research will involve
non-destructive identification and characterisation of the deterioration
mechanisms of contemporary smart and techno-fibres, including, for example,
responsive composites and thermochromic polymers.

The post offers a unique opportunity to work with a team of museum
curators, textile conservators and conservation scientists; regular travel
between the two institutions will be necessary. Applicants should have a
background in science and materials analysis (SEM, FTIR, MS, mechanical
testing, etc.), and have complementary interests in new fibres and artefact
conservation.
