[padg] California preservation assessment of A/V recordings

Hi PADG,

I'm delighted to report that California has completed a statewide survey of the preservation needs of moving image and recorded sound collections. Though only a fraction of all institutions in the state with audiovisual collections, 32 libraries and archives participated in the survey, representing something over a million recordings. The preservation needs are significantly large; a third of all recordings remain uncataloged and a fourth of all recordings are considered to be of high value and in need of preservation reformatting now. Please have a look at the final report with outcomes and appendices at http://calpreservation.org/management/cppav/av_needs.html. The survey was undertaken by the California Preservation Program with funding from the California State Library.

The survey instrument used was CALIPR, originally written to survey preservation needs of print based collections, but recently rewritten for the Web and modified to accommodate audiovisual collections. CALIPR is hosted at UC Berkeley ( http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/CALIPR/) and is available for use by all libraries and archives at no charge.

Many thanks; I'd be most grateful for comments on the report... and on next steps. Barclay
