[PADG:1208] RE: Library bindings from other countries

UIUC has long had some items bound abroad and sent over. These are paid for by the funds that do the initial purchasing of the titles. In most cases, these have been limited to selected materials from Latin America (depending upon the vendor), serials from India (delays delivery, but alleviates a host of management issues that arose when a bibliographer chose to cease this without consulting anyone else), and some items in which vernacular printing is important.

In terms of not binding paperbacks (Carla's question), UIUC maintains a fairly liberal binding policy for paperbacks - third circulation unless the item is prone to damage or likely endure high use in the estimation of the collection manager. The policy is available at: http://www.library.uiuc.edu/prescons/binding_guidelines.htm.
