[PADG:1732] Disaster Planning Workshop

Library Disaster Planning

August 9, 2002
Craven Community College
New Bern, North Carolina

Sponsored by

The North Carolina Library Association Community and Junior College Section &
The North Carolina Preservation Consortium

Fires, hurricanes, tornados, floods, and other natural disasters have destroyed many of our library treasures. Facility disasters, such as broken water pipes and failing HVAC systems, can be just as devastating. Libraries may also be targets of vandalism, terrorism, and war. A written, comprehensive disaster plan can limit the extent of damages to valuable cultural, educational, and historical collections. This one day workshop is open to staff and volunteers in libraries, archives, document repositories, historic sites, museums, and conservation centers. Graduate students in library science, public history, and other cultural studies are also welcome. Topics include advocacy, team building, leadership, health and safety, risk assessment, mitigation, collection priorities, supplies, equipment, resources, immediate response, internal and external communication, salvage methods, security, relocation of services, cooperative agreements, insurance, grants, loans, donations, fund raising, and assessment. Participants will be provided with an outline for creating and improving their own institutional disaster plan.
