This five-day course will combine lecture & laboratory sessions. It 
is intended to provide specialists with the basic information to 
solve their own fungal problems in archives, and natural and cultural 
history heritage collections. The course will emphasize the analysis 
of fungal infestations, growth patterns, and population of conidial 
species, on organic materials, which will help to determine why they 
are present, which is needed to pursue prevention. The latest 
information on bio-aerosols, monitoring, and health issues will be 
discussed. 
Course work will include:
1. Review of the basic biology of fungi including structure, life 
cycle, dormancy, activation, germination, growth, and their 
microenvironments;
2. Lecture & laboratory sessions on manifestations of fungal growth 
on materials, including growth pattern analysis, metabolic products 
and fungal structures in the substrate, and potential material 
interaction, fungal stains and material degradation;
3.Determining the causative species, their source, and evaluating 
species identification methods and need for identification;
4. Prevention and eradication including: evaluation of monitoring 
methods; analysis of the infestation; and analysis of eradication 
methods; and the effects on material & fungus;
5. Testing and evaluation of methods of conservation recovery;
6. Discussions on monitoring  for surface and air contamination, 
health hazards and protection, allergens and toxins and disaster and 
collection recovery planning;
7.  Review and critique of pertinent conservation literature.

Mary Lou Florian asked me to send info about this Mycology Course 
because there are still a few places available.
I took this class in the early 90s. It gave me a basic understanding 
of mold that has served me well on countless occasions. I highly 
recommend the course.
