A customer brought in a portrait made during World War 1 at the Morgan
Studios, Aberdeen, Scotland. This picture looks very similar to a
Carbon process portrait made by the same studio twenty to thirty years
previously, but carries a label that identifies it only as a "Mezzotone"
photograph. It is a rich brown monochrome with a velvety surface
texture and no sign of silver bloom or other aging marks.
Can anybody state with confidence that "Mezzotone" = Carbon process, or
is it a proprietary name that means whatever the photographer wanted it
to mean?
