Mitch,
This description fits that given for mezzotint by Bamber Gascoigne in his
book How to Identify Prints.
"The mezzotint technique with its dark and rich tones was well suited to such
subjects as portraits, interiors or night scenes."
Mezzotone may have been the name given by the printer to indicate that no
color was used in the printing of the plate.
This is as much as I can contribute. There are five pages describing the
various techniques for the preparation of the plate (copper) , etc.
