[frameconnews] Museum glass

Dear Geoff
one answer to your glass problem may be a product called colorclear available
from Rankins
24-34 Pearson Street
London
E2 8JD
Telephone: 0171 729 4200
Fax: 0171 729 7135
It is a colourless coated laminated glass 4.4mm thick which will offer a
greater degree of physical protection as well as uv filtering. Please
remember to advise your customer that ALL light is dangerous to artworks. UV
glazing will certainly help but can often give a false sense of security.

With regard to your question what do museums use, the often don't require uv
filtering in frames as light and other environmental factors are controlled
at source. For loans etc. they will specify a product such as colorclear or
one of the UV filtering acrylics such as Perspex VE or VA grades or
Plexiglass231(not of course on such things as pastels or charcoal drawings as
they hold a static charge which can attract pigments)

Regards

Ian Marsh
