[frameconnews] Re: Tapes

Stephen

Following your message about commercial magazines, you probably won't want
this in either, but I don't see how the tapes discussion can usefully
proceed unless we discuss commercial alternatives. If you think it is
worth discussing but really don't want names in, the Hayaku tape could be
described by its spec. although this would leave room for confusion.

It seems to be universally agreed that self-adhesive tapes are not
acceptable for conservation framing and that freshly prepared starch paste
and Japanese paper tapes are the best. A lot of correspondents in this
group appear to be interested in education and would probably agree that
most framers do not cook their own paste. I doubt is this is purely lack
of education, but also a question of time (and therefore also cost) and
inconvenience. So if more framing shops are to be encouraged to carry out
conservation framing perhaps it would be useful to discuss whether there are
any suitable, easy-to-use commercial alternatives available. For example,
I would be very interested to know if anyone has tried Lineco's gummed
Hayaku Japanese Hinging Tape, and what other framers/conservators think of
it as a substitute for the real thing.
