Actually, a cheaper varient of the milk box is widely available at stores that cater to college
kids, maybe Ikea, too. The kids use them for shelving and storage, stacking them several-high in
dorm rooms. They are a cheap varient, at least the ones I've seen, with too much open space as
compared to the more closed (and thus stronger) sides and bottom of a real dairy crate.
Unless milk is delivered in a very different manner across the pond, I would suspect there are milk
crates being used. If they are, there is a European source.
The milk crates I have are non-ideal for 12" records but perfect for 10" records. I line the bottoms
and sides with Fedex bubble-wrap mailing envelopes for extra cushioning.

I know about your milk boxes from 78-L :) But sadly I doubt they are
sourceable through official channels, especially for affordable
shipment to Europe.

some pallets from the USA in a month or so's time, so that's always an option also).
My half-vast 78 accumulation (c. 54,000 records) is stored in "milk boxes"...the
heavy plastic crates used to transport milk to grocery stores and such. These
are in turn stacked on "pallets" (I need more of those, BTW) in case any water
appears on the basement floors...this provides about 6" of dry space below
the bottom layer of milk boxes!
