Bit of lateral thought, but if one was to degrade the recording
quality enough so that it could be studied maybe that would remove/
reduce any claims of providing copies to the detriment of the original
copyright owner, i.e. who would borrow (to use a modern analogy) a
32kps or lower MP3 music disk, but you could still in most cases study
the tonal range, lyrics, etc.
