Here's the rub -- unless someone made a highly calibrated playback into a verifiably flat-response digital chain, the digi-file would be useless. And it would need to be at least CD resolution WAV to hold the curve in the high frequencies.

No such a digital beast exists as far as I know. The comparable CD to the RCA record was the CBS Labs test CD back in the early 1990's. I'm not sure if a successor gained favor later on.

If you have a good CD transport, try transferring the CBS test CD to your DAW via SPDIF or AES digital and see how your DAW does on playback. You may be surprised.
