My understanding is that Granz also never charged Ella a single dime while
he managed her.

To be fair, Granz managed her second career. She had been every bit as big
of an international star as Sinatra, Elvis or the Beatles the first time
around. That she and Chick Webb have been left off so many "most important X
of the 20th century"  lists speaks volumes about their popularity contest
nature as opposed to scholarship.
