Can't argue with that.As far as jazz,and prewar standards are concerned,Ella tops them all.There are a few who are close seconds,but seconds all the same.Joe Williams,a much better singer than Sinatra,comes to mind.The postwar soul/R&B/gospel period gave us some of the greatest voices the world has ever known,Sam Cooke,Marvin Gaye http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRvVzaQ6i8A ; and far too many others to name,but nobody had the technical ability do use the voice as a virtuoso instrument the way Ella did.
As Sinatra said himself. in one of his better songs,he was just a glorified "saloon" singer.

When asked who he thought the greatest singer of all time was Sinatra
said "you mean _besides_ Ella Fitzgerald?".
I would have to agree. I grew up with Ella's music from birth and in her
prime she was just the textbook example of what great singing is all
about. Even later in life when I saw her with Count Basie and Dizzy as
the featured soloist
she just tore the house down, brick by brick. The cats in the band when
the weren't playing just sat there with their mouths hanging open,
"catching flies".
She was really that good.
