It worked, but it was VERY time consuming. Colour balance among the scans is sometimes an issue.

Would not want to do that again -- much prefer the macro lens/digi-SLR approach. BUT, it is do-able, but not in quantity. Also, the scans need to be done in 4 segments on most garden variety scanners.
