Re: [ARSCLIST] Waldorf - 78 & LP

Hi David:

I'm not sure who Gart is but his history of Grand Award is wrong. This, too has a few errors, but is more correct about the timeline:

The main point is, Grand Award/Command was not sold to ABC until the mid-60's. Enoch Light then went on to found Project 3, which stayed active into the 70's.

ABC dropped the "Grand Award" name anywhere on the packaging by the later mid-60's (original Command records had the copyright date Grand Award, which was the parent company). I don't think they ever revived the brand afterwards. MCA bought ABC-Paramount sometime in the 70's (it might have been the late 60's, that's a date I'm not sure of). There was a series of Command reissues in the early 70's, usually as discounted double-albums, and MCA licensed some titles to Pickwick as cheapo discount-rack products. Then the label was dormant until MCA licensed some pop titles to Verase Serebande (sp?) for CD reissue in the late 80's or early 90's. Separately, MCA Classics reissued some Command Classics titles as part of their Double-Decker 2CD series.

I have Waldorf 78s..always assumed they were part of the same company, which if I'm not mistaken was part of Grand Award. Aside from some 3-track-per-side 78s, I have one that has EIGHT tracks per side! Yes, it's a 78. ROCK 'N' ROLL JAMBOREE, Waldorf Record Corp, BU-3..assorted covers mostly by Artie Malvin and Enoch Light. Seems to me I have another one that uses at least one Paul Whiteman track, which they lifted from a Grand Award LP..might also have one or two of the Wally Cox sides he did for them.

As an aside, Grand Award inherited the Pilotone label and reissued the two Erich Leinsdorf albums (including the Deems Taylor commentaries). I've never found one of these reissues in playable condition.

The whole Grand Award operation was absorbed by ABC Paramount in 1959, per Gart.

There are two Ink Spots items currently on eBay, listed as 78rpm EP's
Any detailed information on either/both labels would be welcomed.
Thanks!
Best wishes, Thomas.
