[ARSCLIST] Early digital in Europe
Hi All:
Sorry in advance for the cross-posting.
In my continuing research on "The Dawn of Digital," I'd like to fill in some gaps in Europe.
I found this excellent AES convention paper detailing the history of Decca's in-house digital
system:
-----------------------------
A Digital Audio Recording System
A Digital Audio Recorder and Electronic Editing System has been developed for use by the Location
Recording Department of the Decca Record Company. It has now been in regular use for over a year,
producing over 500 hours of session recordings together with many hours of editing and disc outting
experience. The paper describes some of the technical and operational factors which have contributed
to the present design.
Preprint Number: 1580 Convention: 65 (January 1980)
Author: Griffiths, F. A.
E-lib Location: (CD aes9) /pp7680/pp8002/1678.pdf
------------------------------
What was the development history at DG and Philips? Did they develop custom systems or use systems
developed by others? What were their first commercially-released digital recordings?
For Decca, the first commercial recording, after experiments throughout 1978, was the 1/1/79 New
Year's Day concert in Vienna by Willi Boskovsky.
Thanks in advance for any/all help.
