Tom,
The Technics 1200 shouldn't have audible rumble.  I have a direct drive 
Denon DP80 with an SME V tonearm in a VPI base designed for the DP80.  I 
hear absolutely no rumble.  Keep in mind, the DP80 is 30 years old now.  
My buddy is working on a hot-rodded Technics SP10mk2 that should be 
outstanding, and it's old too.  It doesn't have any rumble.  I think the 
cruddy bearings in those cheap consumer turntables, whether direct 
driven or via belt, were the source of the rumble.
