Matt, I've seen the same leader tape stickiness too, and only with 3M leader, and getting worse towards the hub. Sometimes slowly hand-winding the tape off would help, but sometimes not. Glad to hear you had good results with your method.

Thanks to all who answered, Richard and Peter as usual very much to the point. And thanks to Dave Radlauer for the list of links that started it. Really useful reading there.
