And George Burns took that fourth wall even further on television., talking to the audience about what had just transpired, having actors walk in front of him on their way to one of the sets, and finally actually watching the show's events on his own TV screen.

I always enjoyed the story of when Larry Keating replaced Fred Clark as Harry Morton. Harry's wife Blanche (Bea Benaderet) was just about to hit him over the head with a vase when George Burns stopped the action, took Fred out of the scene and explained that he was leaving the show, introduced Larry Keating to the audience as the new Harry Morton, introduced him to Bea Benaderet, and then said "Let's get back to the story" - whereupon Blanche hit the NEW Harry over the head with the vase.

I have that show..it's on one of those now hard-to-find $1 DVDs that sold in Dollar Tree a couple of years ago. In fact the first Burns & Allen TV episode is on one of them, done live..with the usual horrible camera problems, booms visible etc, and George setting the scene and eliminating the fourth wall from the outset. Anyone care to tell us who was Harry Morton on THAT episode? Let's not always see the same hands.
