Re: [ARSCLIST] Spoken Arts... and poetry

Very reasonably priced at AbeBooks. "Spoken Records" by Helen Roach.

There was one many years ago by Helen Roach. It included much other spoken stuff and was discographically strange but listed many records. Maybe 1965 or so.

Is there a discography of recorded poetry?
It seems there were quite a few 78's (The RCA Edna St.Vincent Millay set (which was reissued by Caedmon on lp), and other
anthologies on LP - a box set on Gryphon, the Spoken Arts series). During the LP era many recordings on Caedmon, RCA, Decca (Yale Recorded Poets series), etc.
If I remember correctly the Harvard series was on cassette tapes - did they ever come out on LP/CD?
Thanks.
Best wishes, Thomas.

Don't forget the old Harvard Vocarium: Pound, Eliot, Jeffers, Auden, et al.,
which is part of the formidable poetry audio archive here at Harvard. Some of
these were issued in the cassette set, "The Poet's Voice." These days, we're
digitizing things, delivering some by the web when we have permission, and of
course, many of our recordings appear in such things as "Poetry Speaks," the
Random House "Voice of the Poet" series, "Poets on Record," and so on.

There were some very early Folkways 78rpm releases - Bill Bonyun FOL 2, Leadbelly Memorial FOL 4. They also were released on LP, with FOLL prefix, later FP prefix (before the 60's renumbering). If anyone knows which OTHER titles were actually released on 78, I'd appreciate as much detail as you can provide, and release dates if known. Does anyone have information indicating when the 78 series was discontinued? Please indicate if the information is from catalogs, and you have not seen the actual disks. Many Thanks!!! Best wishes, Thomas.

Hi Steve,

Spoken Arts was sold to an educational-market company by Arthur Luce
Klein, who later bought back the recordings that he'd made as Spoken
Arts (I can't give you dates for those events, sorry) and carried on
as World of Words (since he'd sold the company name, too). Effective
July 5, 2001 World of Words and Yale University agreed to establish
the Arthur and Luce Klein Spoken Arts Audio Collection in HSR, which
included nearly all the master tapes made for the Spoken Arts label
and various related paper materials. Preservation projects and
arrangements to make many of the recordings accessible are under way.

Please feel free to ask questions if that's not enough for your data base.

Best wishes, Richard

KLEIN, DR. ARTHUR LUCE

published: April 14, 1997

KLEIN-Dr. Arthur Luce, born March 31, 1916, to Joseph Klein and Jennie
Kallish, in Carbondale, PA, died of a heart attack on April 7, 1997, in
New Rochelle. Dr. Klein was an actor, director, and consumate raconteur.
He founded Spoken Arts Inc., the distinguished recording company which
was among the earliest ventures devoted to the preservation of the
voices of contemporary poets and novelists, as well as to literary and
educational recordings. Dr. Klein earned his bachelor's, master's, and
doctoral degrees at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. He was a
captain in the Army Signal Corps during WWII. Among the beneficiaries of
Dr Klein's generous philanthropy were the Sound Shore Medical Center of
Westchester, the New Rochelle Boys' Club, and the police and fire
departments of New Rochelle, NY. He is survived by his wife Luce; his
children, Judith E. Klein of Manhattan, Florence Klein of Santa Barbara,
CA, Joel Klein of Baltimore, MD, and Rosine Klein of New Rochelle, NY;
seven grandchildren; and his sister Sylvia Meil of Scranton, PA.
Services were held at Temple Israel of New Rochelle on Thursday, April
10th. He was a unique personality who touched many with his creative
fire, his love, and his courageous insistence to always live to the
fullest despite obstacles life offers. We will miss him and we pray that
he finds peace and comfort with the Most High.

AND, which poetry series is not owned by Yale, and why?
(I have a vague recollection of a large series, perhaps a dozen lps, of
recorded poetry which was drawn
from archival recordings,. Perhaps these were leased, thus not owned by
SA).
Thanks, Thomas.

Since I got a copy of my previous message, it appears that the way to send a
message is to do it as a reply, so here goes:

Dear ARCLIST members,

At the suggestion of Jane Klain, at the Museum of Television and Radio, I am
asking all of you for help in locating kinescope materials for the following
important live dramatic anthology programs which were packaged and produced
by our company, Showcase Productions, Inc., for NBC's Producers' Showcase
series. (The full story is at www.showcaseproductions.com) NBC recognizes
us as the copyright owner, and has signed a number of access agreements to
materials for these programs. While we have whatever ownership rights NBC
had, our interest is in getting access so that we can work our kinescope
digital mastering and restoration magic; we will return both the materials
and a first-rate digital clone of our master. If any of you have any
concerns about our rights, rest assured that you can check with NBC, the
MT&R, and (we hope, if they didn't lose the paperwork I sent them) the LOC,
and that we will furnish copies of the documents to you. The missing
