Earlier than that. Universal Talking Machine (Zonophone in the USA) was
heating their stylus around 1903 or so; the purpose was to soften the
wax so that the sound wave would not be considered to be in violation of
the Bell-Tainter patent on "incising".

How accurately controlled the heating was, is anyone's guess.
