I find the best solution is to cut it and take the two pieces and put each into a new shell and transfer them separately. Running a splice over the fragile DAT heads may damage them - and as irreplaceble as they are you need to be careful! Do not expect to save the damaged portion unless the client buys a machine to sacrifice.
