The biggest problem with the CD (and the DVD) is not sonic...it is
graphic! The analog LP required a 12+" square jacket, which provided
room for occasionally-impressive artwork on the front and (if someone
took the time to research and/or write them) extensive text notes on
the back. Digital disks usually are packaged in a "jewel box" just
over 5" square (if one is lucky...manufacturers are constantly trying
to find cheaper packaging!), and that means material originally on LP
gets a 5/12 reduction of the LP cover (with the notes moved to the
insert, IF one is lucky) while never-before-issued material gets
artwork created on a much-smaller "canvas!"
Would it not be possible to include artwork and notes as image files
on the CD's themselves? I'm thinking those could be viewed and/or saved
on a computer (and eventually CD players could include viewers?)...
