I think there is a greater contextual problem which is the overwhelming decline in the amount of live music that people encounter today and the tendency for what little there is to be overamplified and overprocessed.

The LP era happened within the context of a great deal of music being an ordinary part of people's lives. We were amazed by how close to the real thing a good quality recording came. Today few younger people have ever heard the real thing. Without the context of the real thing, quality becomes a lot less meaningful.
