And didn't the early "production-line" machines share a common D/A converter, doing some fancy fast switching between channels? Or is that more Urban Legend?

I remember my first contact with Compact discs was late 1982, a demo at a Tech Hifi store in White Plains NY. It was about as impressive as most digital-recorded LPs released up to that point, in other words not very.
