This is because "better" is always defined as "more profitable!" Cheaper to make can be more profitable as can limiting the competition by using patents along with creating a need for massive capitalization.

In our case, only the performers, critics and fans really care about quality. When you severely compromise quality, only the older folks realize how compelling new music recordings are capable of being.
