It's the light.  A recordable CD is a photograph of
what a pressed CD would look like.  Since the
photographic image is not fixed, it's subject to
continued exposure.  The emulsion responds to a
very narrow band of light, and it needs to be
pretty intense over a prolonged period, but sunlight,
being very broad band, will damage it.
