Didn't Ampex,at one time market an open reel/ R2R video recorder/player? Sometime in the 60s,perhaps ?

Most assuredly, they did. They were very costly and tricky I understand.
The original model (two-inch tape) was followed by a less demanding
one (one-inch), followed by U-Matic and then the cassettes we have known
for home use.
There is a newly released DVD from, I believe, a two-inch master. It is
of the opera of "Ariadne auf Naxos" telecast from Symphony Hall in
Boston. It's clear that the recordist had only one machine; there's a
gap where reels were changed. The performance is a classic (Leinsdorf
conducting, Claire Watson, Beverly Sills, et al.) and has been
circulating on private tapes for nearly forty years.
