What is the genesis of the term "aircheck" and how did it come to mean "off-air recording", or did it mean something different at another time?

My understanding is that it was half of an A/B test - air check ("A") and line check ("B"), so that radio stations could see how the signal they were broadcasting compared to what was being heard at the receiving end. Not to say that for every air check a corresponding line check was ever made.
