Re: [ARSCLIST] Preservation policy question

About keeping the 1/4 " tapes - I'm working on a project here in San Diego where the tapes are the original medium for recording the live performances. The Library of Congress advises me to definitely preserve the tapes. The most information will be on the tapes, and there may be better ways to extract that information at a later time. After transferring the tapes to archival CD's the tapes will go to storage in the UCLA archive facility. I guess the question would be, What is the original medium from which the tapes were made and what is the status and condition of that medium? Do the 1/4 " tapes become a redundant step in the process of preservation?
