I really like the VPI, which I've used at work at the LOC.  While I can't and don't speak for the LOC in any official way, having used VPI, Keith Monks and Nitty Gritty machines (though the NGs were quite old models) I can say that the VPI is best for an LP enthusiaste on a budget. Easy to use, fast and very effective. The Nitty Gritty's I found harder to use and not as effective. They tended to leave a band of residue. They take up less space, but the design suffers I think. Keith Monks are great, of course, but expensive and slow.
The VPI 17 is of course a lot better than the 16.5, but the 16.5 should be good enough to for most home users. I plan to get one myself in not too long.

I'm looking into the nitty gritty 2.5. Could anyone tell me their  
experiences with the VPI 16.5 since it's in the same price range?
(I'm too lazy to wash my discs in the sink)
