Re: [ARSCLIST] Squealing Scotch 996

Phillip,

At this point, LoL only has one-pass fixes and they're not far off from Mobile One. There are The Last Factory lubricants that do a moderately good job, as does Joav Shedema's lubricant (he's from Israel).

On the other hand, Peter Brothers of Specs Brothers warns us about too much silicone of any flavour on the tape.

If it worked for 8-tracks and NAB cartridges, I hold out some hope for graphite, but you should see my white ceramic capstan after playing one 8-track on my APR-5000!

So, all in all, Marie's playing wet with isopropyl alcohol is the easiest to implement. While she was still in New Zealand, she had a whole rig fashioned on a Studer B67, complete with felt pad and squeegee.

It's nasty and I fear it's not going away, but the lubricant seems to be--at least in some tapes.

Keep us posted if you learn anything else.

I'm not saying this 3M 996 is suffering from LoL--I'm saying it could be based on the description. It also might be a 996 reel/box and some other tape ? That's happened at least once or twice.

Cheers,

Richard

So there's no "fix" for it? I'm not proposing Mobil One, but you can't fix it like baking sticky shed?

Gak!

Hi, Conrad,

What do you know about the history of this reel?

If you're not seeing any buildup and it's squealing, you may have:

L O S S O F L U B R I C A N T

or LoL

I've been on this bandwagon ever since I found several Sony reels that exhibited this.

Our resident Southern Kiwi, Marie O'Connell is a world-class expert in dealing with LoL.

IMHO, LoL may become a worse problem than SSS as we go through the years. I've seen it more on cassettes than reels, but Marie's experience is hundreds of reels of a tape brand that we don't see here much in North America (not Zonal, Agfa, or BASF IIRC).

She taught me how to play them wet with isopropyl alcohol. People were kind to me at my recent seminar and didn't bring a piece of tape doing this evil thing.

Cheers,

Richard
