Hi, thanks for the detailed response.
I don't understand what you mean by "wouldn't even attempt to fix."
I didn't get that far into the program, and yes, I believe I WAS
using the Wizard. With relatively quiet files (most of the LP files
I tested), the program at least made a stab at cleaning up the file.
With "noisy" files (most of my 78 files) it just failed. Perhaps I
have to avoid the Wizard and dive into the individual functions.
This is what I was hoping to avoid!
In referring to the Auto Content Wizard in PowerPoint, Edward Tufte
quoted someone else perhaps saying, "Never has something been named
in such mockery of the people who will use it." <big grin>.
Please dig into the ACL program and learn what the half dozen
controls or so do, and adjust. Even Cedar needs adjusting, but it has
only one knob IIRC. The Algorithmix Pro version is about $1500 or so
(US). I haven't checked recently, Cedar is more, IIRC.
I am pretty sure ACL is using Algorithmix cleaning technology and it
should work.
I think hitting "clean" and processing several hundred 78 sides
without paying much attention IS a pipe dream. That's why people like
Art Shifrin and Graham Newton and Parker Dinkens get a good sum for
restoring 78 sides - I don't do it. I do tapes.
If the 78 sides are old enough, there may be transfers already
available for far less effort than doing it yourself.
Also, what stylii do you have for playback (somewhat rhetorical,
because I don't know which one you need for which disc, but I do know
that a standard LP stylus won't play a 78 very well and I do have one
"78" stylus, but not a collection like Art, Graham, or Parker (if it
survived the flood). I collect tape heads <smile>.
