Re: [ARSCLIST] Ampex & Sticky Shed Syndrome
They received the patent on August 17, 1993. They have plenty of time. As
for Richards comment suggesting prior art - I believe that one would have to
argue that the paper you suggested was in fact a public disclosure and that
more then one year had lapsed from the time of that disclosure and the
patent application. But they may have made a preliminary filing in which
case they would probably be OK. Also I don't believe there is any rule in
terms of disclosing ALL The research in any given field in a patent
application - indeed I believe that one is required to disclose what other
patents the invention may rely on.
BUT this is even more interesting to me -there is a new patent!

&RS=REF/5,236,790
The idea of this one is that in order to solve the problem you remove the
backcoating - and even more interesting the patent claims that the
backcoating is the cause in the first place of sticky shed syndrome. My
personal experience is that this isn't the case - but read if for yourself.

When did Ampex get their patent? Patents in the US are for 20 years, I
believe, so even if they were inclined to enforce it, they can't have
many years left.

I wonder why the IEEE Transactions on Magnetics September 1982 paper
"Kinetics of Humid Aging of Magnetic Recording Tape" by H. Neal
Bertram
(Ampex) and Edward F. Cuddihy (JPL) wasn't referenced in the Ampex
Patent.
It is available online at
http://home.flash.net/~mrltapes/bertram_humid-aging.pdf
It is also widely listed on the Web in bibliographies.
Enjoy.
Cheers,
Richard
