As one who does not transcribe wire regularly, but who has in the past, let
me assure you that the respondents are not merely trying to get your business.
Even when in excellent condition - which is rare - wire recordings are
remarkably difficult to handle. The mechanics of the material and of the
player are fascinating when they work perfectly and more than a little
frustrating when they fail. You have had few experiences to compete with
spilled, springy wire, just as your pleasure at watching the guide bob up
and down as the wire threads its way from one spool to another cannot
compare with your horror as you reach for the switch when it ceases to
position properly and piles up - kinks and all.
Having a pro - or at least a regular - play those wires will save you
untold hours and probably quite a few irreplacable documents. Another way
to look at the prospect of transcribing yourself: expect to lose several
spools in learning to use and to repair/align the machine. Where will those
be coming from? Where will you get that time?
