I read this with amazement. I recall in my school days in the mid 70s,
recording student recitals on BASF open reel tape and finding loooong
stretches of clear binder with no oxide coating on it. That was an easy
fault to find of course, and this is a very different issue, but it amazes
me none the less. I just never thought of BASF of having been that high a
quality of tape (by my simple standards of that day). Scotch, Sony, and
Ampex never did that to me. It was not until some time later that I
discovered what they had done to me.
