the core audio device has not proven to be stable.
try a powerbook with metric halo uln2, both have battery options for
those times when needed. the powerbook can burn cd's, the uln is a
sonic transparent I/O.
suggest earthworks qtc1mp in the ortf configuration, excellent sound
quality and quite cpable of handling stringed to electronic
instruments.
on the question of speakers for mastering, try PMC DB 1. professional
monitor company from england has the english audio sensibility and is a
pro monitor not a home speaker.
