I've seen Victrolas with 76 (not 78) as a marked setting on the variable
speed control.  During which years were newly manufactured machines so marked?
Surely this tells us something about the intended "correct" speed of the discs
of these years.

When pitching acoustic Victors I start at 76.4.  This speed seems to be more
or less correct much of the time.  78 is almost always too fast.
