There are two or three copyrights involved: the copyright given to the
composer(s) of the song, the copyright of the publisher (these two carry
mandatory licensing, so while royalties must be paid if the song is not p.d.
[it probably isn't] they can't stop you from reissuing it), and the
copyright
on the specific recording itself. In the latter case, this gets incredibly
complicated;
my advice is to move to Canada, where all recordings made prior to 1/1/1952
are currently p.d.!
