I didn't initially read the comments as Matt doing FULL TRACK mono, but my experience on that is very speed dependent.

At 7.5 in/s the waviness of the tape makes it marginal to keep azimuth. At 3.75, most tapes don't hold azimuth, so I use a 2-track or DIN head to repro it.

HOWEVER, at 15 or 30, PLEASE use a full-track head to repro the full-track material--and adjust its azimuth. You'll be glad you did <smile>.
