You have the receiver plugged into what? It needs to go into your sound card
not your speaker, unless you mis-wrote.

The output of your receiver should go into the line level input of your
sound card (not mic inputs). From your description it sounds as if you have
plugged into the mic input, which would explain the loud volume.
