First, (I hope that since we've never met that you don't mind me calling you
that) we have several different head configurations available for our
Digital Archive System, and also JRF Magnetics is also very capable of
supplying various heads as well. Sorry for the delay in my reply, as I do
normally monitor the list daily. I was out of town and couldn't even get
dialup. I totally agree about the mono head for playback. We are currently
working on a "white paper" which will try as objectively as possible to
explain all of the different 1/4" tape formats (and cassette as well) that
were mass-manufactured. Hopefully, this will be of some assistance to
archivists who are having to plan how to transfer their collections. Of
course, we don't pretend to have all of the answers regarding the many, many
different formats that are out there. That's why there are experts in this
field (such as yourself).
