Steve,
The measurement you are doing is a valid one. However, many noise
measurements use a correcting filter that adjusts the number for
the frequency response and masking affects of the human ear.
"A" weighting is a commom one. I would suggest that an un-weighted
number of 65 dB would be good, with a weighted figure of 75 dB or more.
Hum is usually a problem, as well as general low frequency noise boosted
by RIAA equalization. If you play the disks without equalization, the
low end noise will still be boosted during final equalization.
