RE: arsclist Digital Audio Workstations

Jim,

Is this one of the arguments for a software-only solution? I am impressed with what the software I'm using does on essentially a plain-vanilla Windows-based PC. Yes, you need to install a sound card that has good I/O (I bought a digital card, which keeps analog out of the computer) and it's been working quite well. I find with all of these tools the learning curve is steep! (I just had a hand-to-forehead duuuh experience with PhotoShop today--I had not fully understood the power of masks before today).

For my sideline restoration, CD transfer "business," (definitely not my day job) the PC-based system allows a LOT of power without buying dedicated hardware that will go obsolete. When (not if) I upgrade the (P2/333/128M/26G) computer I'm running this on, that computer will still have some value in my home.

Cheers,

Richard

I HATE when vendors do that! Nothing is forever but I do feel that there is
a responsibility to the clients to at least give them a migration path that
is not the same as having to go out and buy a new one at the same price you
would have paid anyhow. Some vendors antagonized their clients doing this to
such an extent that the existing clients essentially boycotted the company
and really killed the it - I will not give the EXACT name - but think
non-linear video editor that had the name CUBE in it. Sure the stuff get's
obsolete and the vendor cannot support it because THEY can't get parts any
more either, but give the existing customers a break and they will come back
for more every time... well that is what I think - but then again I do not
sell audio workstations..........
