Video Format Identification Guide

Back Up Next

U-matic, Sony, JVC, Panasonic and others (1971) ANSI/SMPTE 21M-1997 Also known as Type E Helical Scan

The first successful cassette videotape for professional (business, education, industry) applications. It ultimately found its niche in ENG and industrials.

Other tapes that look like this: 3/4" U-matic SP. These upgraded U-matic tapes are normally labeled with "SP" meaning "Superior Performance." Most SP formats of any kind use special tape and record sharper images. In the U-matic format the SP tapes can be played on non-SP machines (however, with no picture improvement).
