tumbling drum

A device designed to test aspects of a binding. It consists of a revolving octagon-shaped drum equipped with a pocket that lifts the book to the top of the drum and lets it free-fall (about 2 feet) to strike the lower sides. The number of impacts required to produce failure of the joints is recorded. The tumbling drum was developed by the United States Testing Company. See also: UNIVERSAL BOOK TESTER .
