Tory, Geoffrey ( 1480-1533 )
A French printer, wood engraver, designer, and
royal printer to Francis 1. For the embellishment
of bindings, he designed two panels in the form of
arabesques in the contemporary Italian style, of
which the famous pot cassé device forms a
part. In his smaller stamps, only the broken
pitcher appears, hut in his larger panel the vase
is pierced by a wimble (gimlet, drill, auger, or
"tore"). The device apparently was employed in
allusion to the death of his daughter; however, it
may have been a pun on the name Tory, although he
used the device on his own publication. (94 , 347 )
