three-dimensional appliques

A form of book decoration consisting of textured and raised-surface designs on the covers. They are in the form of collages, appliques, mosaics, sculptured forms, onlays, etc. Common materials, such as string, yarn, cloth, and the like, are used in the execution of such bindings today, along with fired enamel, glazed clay, metals, and glass.
