The strips of cloth (usually linen), vellum, nylon, etc., to which the sections of a book are sewn, and whose free ends, or SLIPS (1) , are attached to the boards, or are glued between SPLIT BOARDS to impart additional strength to the binding structure. Cf: BANDS (1) ;CORDS ;WEBBING(S) (1) .
